Road works: the nightmare returns

Shaw Road — more roadworks mess
WORKMEN ripped up part of Shaw Road within days of it reopening fully after seven months of traffic chaos.
The road was dug up for a gas emergency, but council bosses launched an investigation when the work, which should have been completed last Wednesday, was still ongoing at the weekend.
Furious residents contacted the Chronicle when they were faced with yet more roadworks after having to cope with a seven-month nightmare and long traffic diversions.
Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member in charge of highways, said a gas leak meant there had been no option. But, he said, the work, started by United Utilities on September 1, should have been completed and the road reinstated by September 9.
When that failed to happen, he sent council officers out to find out more, and said that in future, work done by the utilities would be strictly monitored.
