Keep the kettle boiling on Macmillan coffee day

A FUND-RAISING stalwart is urging Oldhamers to put the kettle on and back Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Doreen Firth, who has held charity coffee mornings for the past nine years, raised £630 at her event in St Paul’s Church, Shaw, earlier this month. She has raised more than £4,000 in total.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will be held nationwide on Friday but Doreen and her loyal team of helpers held their event early and are encouraging others to take part.

Doreen said: “The work Macmillan do is brilliant. I know a lot of people who have been helped by Macmillan and I would urge everyone to take part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, it’s simple and easy to do — without a doubt all the money you help raise will be put to good use.”

In 2008, there were 100 Macmillan coffee mornings held across Oldham raising some £13,000.

This year, the charity needs Oldhamers to raise more money to help fund its vital cancer services — ranging from specialist nurses and doctors, to grants and advice for those who have money problems because of their illness.

Rose Tipton, fund-raising manager for Oldham, said: “The help we provide is absolutely essential and we want to be able to give support to everyone who needs it.

“It’s a really fun event as well — especially as you can tailor it to suit yourself.

“You can have a traditional coffee morning at home or work, organise a glamorous coffee-themed evening, or even serve up smoothies or herbal tea instead of coffee.

“It’s a piece of cake to help Macmillan.

“And don’t worry if you can’t hold your event on the official coffee morning day, just organise it at a time that suits you.

“So why not join the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday, September 25, and help Macmillan reach more people affected by cancer.”
