Dedicated doctor will be missed by all

A POPULAR GP who treated thousands of Oldham patients during his career has died in hospital following a short illness.

Dr Jagjit Kapur (53) was born in Jalandhar, India, but moved to Birmingham with his family when he was only two-years-old.

He studied medicine at Sheffield University and completed his training in Rotherham before moving to Oldham in 1984.

Dr Kapur, who lived in Rochdale, set up his GP practice in Werneth Hall Road where he worked for 25 years.

The father-of-two was also qualified in dermatology and took referrals for minor surgery from across the region.

And he helped to shape GP services in Oldham by attending meetings of the Local Medical Committee.

His son Jamie Kapur (24) said: “As a doctor, he was always friendly and had the ability to make his patients laugh which put them at ease. He was hard-working, had a great passion for detail and liked to organise things in a certain way. He wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember and built the surgery from the ground up.”

Jamie said seeing his father at work influenced his decision to follow in his footsteps and become a doctor.

He said: “He was a very devoted father and was proud of myself and my sister Katie who is an English teacher in London.

“He always used to say that the most important thing was seeing us achieve things in life.”

Dr Janet Day, GP partner at the surgery since 1994, said Dr Kapur was instrumental in increasing the number patients at the practice as well as making it a training practice for new GPs.

She said: “This is a very friendly and homely practice, something Dr Kapur established.

“He was caring and professional, very popular among his patients. He would try to sort out their problems and get them the care they needed.

“He was basically the core and the heart of the heart of the surgery, and has left a massive hole.”

A funeral service will be held at St George’s Church, Bury Road Rochdale, on Friday at 12.45pm prior to committal at Rochdale Crematorium.
