Two men died when a Honda car left the Isle of Skye road above Greenfield and turned over in a ditch early yesterday.

Three other men escaped without serious injuries after the 4.45am crash on the A635 Holmfirth Road. Two were taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital, one to Tameside General.

The car, a green Honda Accord, is believed to have been travelling towards Oldham when it left the road, flipped over and skidded along a ditch. All five men are believed to be in their 20s and from the Stockport area. Today the two men who died were named as Muhammed Zeeshan (18) and Noorullah Zaeer (19).

It was one of the first call outs for the North West Ambulance Service’s new hazardous areas response team (HART), set up only weeks ago.

The team is specially trained to release casualties and begin treatment in difficult conditions or terrain.

One man had an injured arm, another a head injury and the third was taken to hospital for a precautionary check.

The road was closed from the Clarence roundabout for several hours and firemen helped police as the three casualties were helped from the car. Police accident investigators were on the site for several hours before the car could be taken away on a low loader, and there were lengthy skid marks on the road.

Firemen from Oldham, Mossley and West Yorkshire were called out, and used powerful flood lights to illuminate the road.

The accident site is before the A635 begins its descent down a series of bends into Greenfield.
