PLAIN-TALKING Chris Davies
MEP’s opinion of politicians who fiddle expenses
OLDHAM Euro-MP Chris Davies has launched a scathing attack on politicians who abuse the expenses system, branding them “dirty cheating b******s”.
Mr Davies, known for his frankness, told the party conference in Bournemouth that any MP or MEP found to have abused the system should be thrown out and have no part in politics.
He said: “I hate the dirty cheating b******s who have taken every opportunity to fill their private pockets with public money. I despise them.
“I want them exposed, I want them punished, I want them thrown out. They should play no part in public life.”
He went on: “Honesty should be the hallmark of public life.”
His outburst came as the party backed measures to clean up politics. It called for MPs who broke the rules to face criminal investigation, and the adoption of all the recommendations by the Committee on Standards in Public Life.
Lib-Dem chief whip Paul Burstow, Sutton and Cheam MP, also hit out at Tory Alan Duncan who recently claimed MPs were treated badly. He said: “It is a privilege to be a Member of Parliament.”
The package of measures agreed by the party also included a ban on MPs making capital gains on homes funded by the taxpayer.
