Shovelling rubbish in Sholver
Date published: 28 September 2009
COMMUNITY-minded volunteers took to the streets of Sholver to transform grot-spots into pristine places.
They worked with the Community Payback team, Street Scene and First Choice Homes Oldham on Saturday to clean up around Sholver Youth Centre and Heron Street.
The effort was part of the national Big Tidy Up scheme and Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member for environment and infrastructure said: “Council staff take great pride in keeping the streets clean, however, as in many things the council does need citizens to get involved.
“These sort of clean ups show that there are many people who are concerned about rubbish and litter where they live and want to do something about it.
“In Oldham a total of £3 million is spent every year on keeping our street tidy, money that could be far better on many other local initiatives.”
People can play their part by using litter bins, taking their rubbish home and telling the council quickly about any grot spots or fly-tipping they come across to 0161-770 6644.
