£5m security aid for businesses

OLDHAM retail businesses can apply for funds from a £5 million pot to improve security.

Small retailers in 50 priority crime-reduction areas can bid for grants of up to £3,000 or team up for larger grants of up to £50,000, which may be used to improve security, helping to reduce their risk of crime.

Welcoming the grant fund launched by Home Office Minister Alan Campbell, the National Security Inspectorate (NSI), the UK’s leading independent approvals and certification body for the security industry, advised small retailers to use the funding carefully.

A spokesman said: “If you are a small retailer in receipt of the grant, we recommend that you begin by contacting your local police who can offer impartial advice as to which security measures will increase your premises’ protection.

“It is also a good idea to check with your insurance company, which may give you a discount if you have a professionally-installed intruder alarm or CCTV.

“If you have decided on a CCTV or intruder alarm system, contact and request quotes from at least three approved installers.

“Ensure each of these companies visits your retail unit to conduct a risk assessment before submitting a quote. Without doing this they cannot provide you with an accurate quote, as each property’s risk levels are unique.

“Do not rush into signing a contract — take your time and be certain that you understand what you get for your money. The cheapest deal may not always be the best, so seek further advice if necessary.

“When the alarm or CCTV is installed make sure the installation company provides a Certificate of Compliance, which you may needed as evidence for your insurer.”

In Greater Manchester, only Tameside, Bolton and Wigan are also in the 50 pilot areas.
