Torch relay burns bright

A PIONEERING Pass the Torch project to raise vital cash for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is in full flame.

Trainee engineers from Oldham Training Centre, in Lees Road, designed and created a perpetually-lit torch for hospice supporters to hand on in a fundraising relay.

Tesco’s Huddersfield Road store was first off the blocks with an in-store cycling marathon, where staff took it in turns to clock up an impressive £921 in sponsorship by keeping the pedals turning for 24 hours.

Tesco Community Champion Caroline Dean then handed the torch over to Jill Fullalove at Salton Europe for the second leg of the challenge.

Staff at the Failsworth firm are preparing to step out on November 6 to cover a collective distance which will break the 26-mile marathon barrier.

And to liven up the event, the 35 “runners” will each wear fancy dress to work before walking a mile for the cause.

Allegra Holbrook, Dr Kershaw’s community fundraiser, said: “They have really thrown themselves into the Pass the Torch project, and it’s great to see them enjoying the challenge.”

Jill explained: “We have supported Dr Kershaw’s for a number of years. Everyone has been really enthusiastic about the Pass the Torch project, and the number of people taking part is still growing.

“As well as raising money for such a good cause it has also raised morale within the company and created a feel good factor.”
