OLDHAM Coliseum is on the hunt for a new deputy chairman to help plan for the future.

Current deputy Steve Lowe is stepping down after 12 years.

Chairman Colin Smith said: “Steve has done a wonderful job and has been extremely supportive over the years, but his term has now come to an end and we are looking for someone to replace him.”

Mr Smith described the voluntary post as “potentially demanding,” saying: “We want someone with experience linked to the arts, and with a strong commercial background because we need to raise a substantial amount of money each year to supplement grants and box office income.”

The deputy chairman will work closely with the chairman on the board of trustees, and act as an ambassador for the theatre.

Established in 1885, the Oldham Coliseum presents more than 350 performances each year, including eight in-house productions, and provides a stage for touring companies.

With a turnover of more than £2 million, its programme ranges from classic theatre and musicals to one-night comedy shows, attracting an annual audience of more than 100,000, and welcoming 20,000 people to participate in events.

An advert for the position demands applicants have “experience of leadership at board level”, with “experience of representing organisations both internally and externally at a senior level”.

It also calls for “an understanding of the principles of the public sector”, and an ability to make strategic decisions.

The job consists of around one day a month, and Mr Smith said he was happy to discuss the role with anyone who was interested before the November 20 closing date.

He can be contacted on 01457-873055.

Interviews are being held this week for an executive director to replace Liz Wilson, who has been appointed as chief executive of York Theatre Royal.

There are six on the short list, and the successful candidate will be named shortly.
