Plenty to cheer

WHILE Latics may struggle for silverware this season, Oldham Athletic’s cheerleading girls have swept the board.

Oldham Athletic Community Trust’s Street Cheer teams Blue Crew and Blue Army picked up first place in each of the three categories they entered at the National Street Games competition.

It was a day to remember for the two teams at the event at Fenton Manor, Stoke, as they impressed with their talents.

And the success didn’t end there as Oldham Athletic Community Trust and Blue Crew collected the final trophy of the day as they received the Community Development Award.

This is a special achievement as it represents all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes by all the people involved, especially the coaching staff who give up their time every week to train the teams and work to promote Street Cheer in schools and communities.

The competition saw teams from as far afield as Weston-Super-Mare compete.

The Blue Army not only collected the Street Game Peeps and Community Peeps categories, but the newly-formed Blue Crew, a group of mums, made it three out of three by collecting first place in the Masters section.

The win was even more remarkable as the group had only been training for eight weeks.

Coach and administrator Wendy Noble said: “We are extremely proud of all the girls who took part and especially the Masters team who only had a short time to train.

“The day was one big surprise, winning three out of three categories, but to pick up the Development in the Community Award sealed the occasion.”

Inclusion and health co-ordinator Dale Newton said: “This is a very hard but exciting competition and to enter three categories and be victorious in all is an outstanding achievement.

“But also to win the Community Development Award is the icing on the cake. Congratulations and well done to both teams and to all involved.”
