James, 78, was a community stalwart

A FORMER Oldham magistrate who received the MBE from the Queen has died aged 78.

James Stansfield, of Kenilworth Close, Lees, received the MBE in 1988 for his work as a senior customs and excise officer for 40 years.

He died on Tuesday in hospital after suffering an infection during a battle against cancer.

Mr Stansfield was well regarded for his community work, including sitting as a local magistrate for nearly 30 years, being deputy chairman of the juvenile bench and as a governor at Oldham’s Blue Coat School.

He was also chairman of Oldham Round Table and was on the Duchy of Lancaster advisory panel for Oldham.

Mr Stansfield enjoyed DIY and walking and was interested in history and current affairs.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Louie (81), son Adam Stansfield, grandson Eli (10) and sister Norma.

Adam said: “He was a very lovely, caring man. He put a lot into the community and had a great sense of humour. Everyone who knew him will miss him.”

The funeral takes place at Greenacres Congregational Church, Galland Street, on Wednesday at 10.45am, followed by committal at Oldham Crematorium at noon.
