THOUSANDS of Morrissey fans were left disappointed when the singer cancelled a show just two songs in after a fan threw a plastic tumbler of beer at him.
I was one of a 10,000-strong audience that witnessed the former Smiths frontman get hit in the face halfway through his second song “Black Cloud” at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Saturday.
After a few seconds, the 50-year-old, who was left drenched in beer, said “goodbye” and walked off the stage followed by his band. Boos rang out across the arena as the crowd were told after a 15 minute wait that he would not be returning.
Staff at the Echo Arena are reviewing CCTV footage to try and get to the bottom of what happened.
The Chronicle ran a coach trip to the concert and thousands of Morrissey’s Manchester-based fans made the short trip to Liverpool.
The majority of fans were sympathetic towards Morrissey and directed their anger at the person who had thrown the tumbler but many felt that the singer could have come back on stage.
My £32.50 ticket was a wedding present but I forked out £75 on a hotel room and £20 in petrol. Fans are hoping to find out later today whether they will get a refund.
Saturday’s incident comes just two weeks after Morrissey collapsed with breathing difficulties while on stage in Swindon.
