Festival tribute to the fallen
Date published: 09 November 2009
Old soldiers, singers, dancers, and the people of Oldham remembered the borough’s war dead at the Festival of Remembrance on Friday.
Held at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the festival included a shower of poppies, a display of military standards, and an address by the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Jim McArdle. Sombre reflection was contrasted with military and wartime entertainment including a lone piper, a disco drill from air cadets, singer Linda Dee, bands, drums and a raffle.
Standards were on display from the armed services, veterans, Polish ex-combatants, cadets, the police, Salvation Army, and Chelsea pensioners.
