Diamond couple still full of sparkle

BRITAIN joined NATO, the gas industry was nationalised and the UK’s first comprehensive school was opened.

And 1949 was also the year that Royton lovebirds Derek and Olwyn Platt vowed to spend the rest of their lives together.

The great-grandparents, who married at St John’s Church in Failsworth, celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary today.

The pair, of Pennine View, met at Billingtons Dance Hall and courted for two years before Derek (79) proposed on the top deck of a bus.

Olwyn (78), who used to work in a government stationery office in Chadderton, and former painter and decorator Derek will celebrate their big day with a meal with daughters Beverley and Alison, grandchildren Kelly and David and great-granddaughter Leah.

The couple believe separate interests have kept their marriage strong.

Derek plays a round of golf while Olwyn goes to the gym — but they both enjoy a game of bowls.

Olwyn said: “Love, respect and support each other through the rough and the smooth and keep a good sense of humour.”
