Date published: 12 November 2009
A MUCH-LOVED great-grandmother has died only weeks after celebrating her 100th birthday.
Alice Mann, of Laburnum House, Shaw, died peacefully in hospital on Tuesday.
The centenarian had enjoyed a champagne reception in September when she was visited by Oldham Mayor, Councillor Jim McArdle, along with family and friends.
Industrious Alice started work at Lily Mill in Shaw aged 14.
She married her late husband Joshua, a cellar boss at Shawside Cotton Mill who served in the Home Guard during the Second World War, at Shaw Parish Church in December, 1931.
Alice carried on working after the birth of her only child, Douglas, in 1932.
The sprightly great-grandmother kept active over the years, with hobbies including ballroom dancing and crown green bowls.
She moved into Laburnum House, where her mother Emma had been a resident, in December, 1999, and met up with a number of childhood friends.
Alice had six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild due in February.
Her funeral will take place at Hollinwood Crematorium on Tuesday at 2pm.
Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to the Christie at Oldham campaign.
