READY FOR THE SWITCH-ON
CHILDREN’S favourite Angelina Ballerina will take centre stage at Oldham’s biggest ever Christmas lights switch on and fireworks spectacular.
The dazzling dancer will mingle with festive shoppers on Sunday before pulling the plunger to illuminate town centre streets.
Angelina will headline an entertainment showcase with Dreamgirls Dance, Santa Claus and his reindeer and the Mayor and Mayoress of Oldham on stage near the war memorial at Oldham Parish Church from 4.20pm.
The switch-on will be the culmination of a day of street performances starting with the opening of a winter wonderland marquee in Market Place at 11am.
Councillor Jackie Stanton, deputy leader of Oldham Council, said: “Our town centre lights switch-on has long been a favourite family event but this year’s display promises to be extra-special.
“Angelina Ballerina will obviously be a huge crowd pleaser but we’ve also made several important changes so that we can offer an even more comprehensive entertainment package.
“Sunday will see a full day of activities in a special winter wonderland marquee, plus some spectacular dance-themed entertainment leading up the big switch-on
“There are also now two large screens in the town to enable everyone to watch the action, plus an enhanced sound system, and brand new Christmas lights on Albion Street.
“This will be an afternoon of wonder and excitement — and we are expecting thousands of local families to turn out and enjoy the fun.”
From 11am to 4pm a winter wonderland marquee in Market Place will offer free craft activities where youngsters can get into the festive mood by making their own magic wands, fancy dress costumes, crackers, fairy dust and decorations for a tree of wishes.
