Police purge on metal thieves

POLICE are getting tough against metal thieves and issuing advice to residents.

A significant upturn in the global demand for non-ferrous metals such as copper and lead has led to a national rise in their theft, with raiders targeting building sites, churches, schools and houses.

Officers in Chadderton are asking local businesses and residents to follow a few simple steps to avoid becoming a victim.

They will also be visiting scrap-metal dealers to inspect their books, encourage them to become licensed businesses and carry out stop checks on metal-transporting vehicles.

Advice includes:

Ensure that there are no weak spots around the perimeter of the property where criminals can gain easy access.

Secure all gates, doors and entrances when frequent access is not needed.

Secure anything that could be used to break and gain entry, such as ladders or scaffolding.

Improve visibility by cutting back vegetation and moving items such as bins that obscure natural surveillance.

Ensure premises are well lit after dark.

Sgt Kam Hare, of the Chadderton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Since October 14 there have been 16 metal thefts across Chadderton, mainly lead from roofs.

“We are urging home-owners, businesses, schools and churches to work with us to help tackle this crime by reporting anything suspicious and follow our crime-prevention tips.

“While metal thefts account for only a small percentage of total crime in Chadderton, we are determined to nip this trend in the bud and reassure residents that we are committed to driving down all types of crime across the area.”

To report crime, call police on 0161-872 5050 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555 111.
