THE streets of Oldham will be alive with the sound of music this weekend as the borough’s biggest ever Christmas countdown continues.

Shoppers will be entertained by performances from The Stockport Liberty Belles, the Waverton Handbell Ringers and the French Quarter jazz band in Market Place from 10.30am on Saturday.

There will also a be a DJ booth and a vintage bus, courtesy of Manchester Transport Museum, to explore. Deputy council leader Jackie Stanton said: “Last weekend’s lights switch-on was our most successful yet.

“We’re trying to encourage more people to shop local and support Oldham’s businesses through the credit crunch — and attract more shoppers from across the region. The countdown is now also under way towards the launch of our Festive Village, which will run from next Saturday until December 13.

“This is the real centrepiece of our Christmas planning with an ice-rink and a stunning fairytale-themed setting.”

THE countdown to Christmas starts next week with lights being switched on in Royton and neighbouring Shaw and Crompton.

On Thursday (November 26) they will be switched on outside Royton Town Hall by Santa Claus and his helpers at 6.30pm The following evening Big Al from Revolution Radio and Santa will do the honours outside Playhouse 2 in Newton Street, Shaw (6.30pm).
