Vicar’s fond farewell

A ROYTON vicar is retiring after nearly 40 years of service to the church. The Rev David Booth will hold his last service at St Paul’s Church on Sunday at 3.30pm.
The proud Mancunian, originally from Harpurhey, began his ministry over the Pennines after training at college in Mirfield. After being ordained he served at three different churches in Leeds.
He moved to St Paul’s, Church Street, in 1995 and has been there for 14 years. He is retiring after celebrating his 65th birthday today — marked with a quiet meal with friends.
Mr Booth said it was a wrench to leave, adding: “I know it’s time to leave but it’s very sad to go. It’s the right thing to do. It’s a very busy and lively parish and needs a younger man.”
Sunday’s service will be followed by an event to wish Mr Booth all the best in his retirement. The Church of England will now spend time choosing his replacement.
