History day to repeat itself...
Date published: 23 November 2009
A special history day at Lees Library was so successful it will be repeated.
And a historic archive of the village is also being created.
The Reminiscences Day was held with the Lees Local History Group and storyteller Patrick Ryan at the Thomas Street community hub.
Documents and photographs were displayed and people took along their own photographs and information about the mills in Lees and also to the now defunct local railway.
Mr Ryan also retold his own history, born in America and resident in the UK for the past 20 years, although his ancestors were from Roscommon in Ireland.
With the success of the event the regular coffee afternoon on November 25, has been extended from 1pm until 4pm.
There will be conversations with local historian Freda Millett and older community members are being invited to describe their memories of schools, buildings and leisure activities.
The Lees Local History Group, formed in July to create an archive on the history of Lees, meets on the second Wednesday of each month, the next one on December 9.
The group will be working with Roger Ivens from Oldham Local Interest Centre.
Any information should be put in an envelope and addressed to Jenny Daubney, Chair, Lees Local History Group, c/o Lees Library Community Hub, with contact details included.
