READY for adventure: Some of the new cub-scouts.
A NEW Scout group has been started in the Glodwick area to give local youngsters the opportunity for adventure.
Oldham Mayor Councillor Jim McArdle was among the dignitaries present as the 6th Oldham Scout Group was officially opened at Pakistani Community Centre, Marlborough Street.
It will be situated in Glodwick in the heart of the Asian community.
Scouting has existed in this area in the past but not for some years, though the District Headquarters is nearby.
Acting District Commis-sioner John Woolley said: “Oldham is the largest Scout District in the Greater Manchester North Scout County and has a large and diverse youth community.
“It is to our mutual advantage and benefit that we endeavour to embrace as many young people as possible in what scouting today has to offer.
“The enthusiasm shown by the prospective leaders and the young people who have so far shown an interest in the group has been a great boon and we look forward to the group having a successful future.”
Since adventurer and TV presenter Bear Grylls, best known for TV series Born Survivor, was appointed the youngest ever Chief Scout, at the age of 35, in the summer, there has been renewed interest.
Mr Woolley added: “A lot of young people have been attracted since his appointment but this gives us another big challenge in providing enough adult support to meet the increase in potential members.”
