Resident leads woman to safety in fire

A FIRE chief commended the swift actions of a man who led an elderly woman to safety when a fire broke out at a housing complex in Royton last night.
Watch commander Mark Murphy from Chadderton Fire Station, said the man, a Mr Dalton, who was a resident at Royton Hall Park, did a “super job” helping a fellow-resident.
He was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm, and found the woman, who was in her 80s and confused, in the Thomas House common room of the complex.
The fire began shortly after 11pm in the living room of a ground floor flat, caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette, and damage was confined to the room.
No one else was evacuated.
