IT seems an unlikely picture, given the current wet weather, but boats have been left high and dry as the waters recede at Redbrook Reservoir at Stanedge cutting.

Hardy swimmers from Royton Bluefins will be watching to see if the situation improves for their annual New Year’s Day swim, but the current levels have little to do with the weather.

The reservoir, which was built over 200 years ago to feed the Huddersfield Narrow Canal through Saddleworth, is being drained by British Waterways for scheduled maintenance.

Pipes, valves and the overflow are being inspected, before the water level is allowed to rise again shortly.

Then in the summer, the water will be drained again for repairs to pipes and valves and the creation of a new overflow weir.
