Lights plunger poised

DELPH will be glowing with seasonal cheer on Saturday when the Christmas lights are switched on.
Three village trees will be illuminated in turn during the ceremony from 5.30pm with a host other festive decorations and displays unveiled.
The event will be hosted by Gilbert Symes and will feature Delph Brass Band, Oldham Scottish Pipe Band and Father Christmas.
Three senior residents have been asked to man the plunger to switch on the lights — Jack Steele, Stanley Stewart and Clara Shaw, who celebrates her 97th birthday on the day.
The Wake Up Delph Committee have fund-raised for the lights and organised the event. They are anticipating a large turnout from villagers with many having already reserved places for the ice rink from noon (call 01457-874 539 to book).
Mulled wine, minced pies, roast chestnuts, carol singing and a Christmas grotto will add to the festive feel, while a grand fireworks finale will ensure Delph is full of seasonal spirit.
