Green-fingered youngsters digging in

A COUNTRYSIDE project saw green-fingered youngsters re-plant more than 100 saplings in Tandle Hill Country Park.
Year 6 pupils at St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Shaw were invited to take part by countryside ranger Laura Vayro. Youngsters spent a day digging up Beech Tree saplings that were growing too close together, and replanting them around the park in more open spaces.
Steve Hill, deputy head teacher, said the children thoroughly enjoyed the whole morning.
He said: “It was great to see them working hard together and getting muddy as they managed to plant well over 100 saplings between them. As part of the project the children learned a great deal about woodland maintenance and renewal and there was a real sense of achievement when we had finished.
“We hope to visit the park again in the New Year to complete the replanting project.”
