Football club’s lifeline to homeless groups
Date published: 02 December 2009
Chadderton Football Club is offering accommodation to local groups after community facilities were closed down at the near-by library on Middleton Road.
Glyn Mellor, treasurer of the Broadway side which plays in the Vodkat North-West Counties first division, has already arranged for Chadderton Historical Society to use the clubhouse for its monthly meetings, although the club has no storage facilities for its archives.
The society had hoped to run the Middleton Road library as a heritage centre with community rooms after the books and staff transferred to the new Wellbeing Centre in Wellington Street, but this has been turned down by Oldham Council.
However, after reading in the Chronicle that a dance school and two bands which used the library rooms were also homeless, Mr Mellor has made the offer to try and help other local groups.
Mr Mellor said: “The clubhouse may be useful to people for a small rental.
“We would have to come to some arrangements as we train once a week, but the room can hold up to about 50 people, or smaller groups.”
He can be contacted on 07771-171 311.
