OLDHAM crooner Paul Speak-Heaton beat thousands of singers from all over the country to be crowned champion of Open Mic UK 2009.
Paul, of Ruthin Close, Hollinwood, beat 8,000 contestants to the title after sailing through local and regional heats.
Judge Chris Grayston, of Future Music, said: “Each of the finalists really impressed us.
“Each one performed well at the regional live shows and really earned their place at the final. There were a variety of vocals and genres on the day which made for an explosive show
“I am confident that we have chosen the right winner — Paul was consistent throughout the competition and really stood out vocally. He was a unanimous winner with the judges and shone at the final. I am looking forward to next year’s competition and of course working with Paul.”
Paul will now get access to a £25,000 recording package to kickstart his singing career.
