Super centre for GPs opens

A new GP health centre in Oldham town centre will be officially opened on Wednesday.

The Lindley House Health Centre will be based in the building which used to house the Oldham Walk-in Centre in John Street. The Oldham Walk-in Centre has moved into the ground floor of the Oldham integrated care centre in Oldham town centre.

The public will be able to see what’s on offer on the opening day, between 10am to 4pm and there will be healthy eating food stalls, recipes and demonstrations.

Oldham Community Health Services (part of NHS Oldham) will be offering Wii Fit demonstrations and trials.

And services and agencies working with the GP practice, including Oasis young persons’ drug and alcohol services, Oldham Community Leisure, Women’s refuge and bereavement support, will be there.

The health centre is one of four new GP practices in Oldham set to increase access to services.

The aim of the scheme is to provide extra GP services in parts of Oldham which are lacking and offer extended opening hours, making it easier for people to see a doctor at a time which is convenient for them.

Shauna Dixon, director of clinical leadership with NHS Oldham, said: “This new GP health centre not only brings more new doctors to Oldham, but it will also help to expand the health services that can be offered to local communities in a central location.”

Patients can register at the health centre which will be open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm, by calling 0161-0785 7520, but people can drop in to the centre for an appointment even if they are not registered.
