POLICE confiscated more than 150 bottles and cans of lager, wine, vodka and cider in a bid to clean up the streets of Failsworth.

Officers from the Failsworth and Hollinwood neighbourhood policing team carried out patrols in the area, seizing alcohol from youths, some as young as 14.

Sgt Paul Archer said: “Young people may see having a drink with their friends as a bit of fun but it is very often the root of anti-social behaviour such as noise nuisance and vandalism which can make the lives of people living in the vicinity an absolute misery.”

Officers also carried out test-purchases resulting in two off-licenses being issued with £80 fines for selling alcohol to underage teenagers.

Sgt Archer added: “Residents tell us that alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour is a big concern and tackling under-age sales of alcohol is a really important way of reducing this problem. The fixed penalty notice should be a reminder to anyone with responsibility of serving alcohol, that selling to underage children is illegal and it isn’t worth your hard earned wages.

“We also want to remind the members of the public that they face the same punishment if they purchase alcohol for an under-age teenager.

“Don’t be persuaded to break the law.”

All confiscated alcohol has been donated to the Mill Stream Animal Shelter to include in its Christmas raffle.
