OLDHAMERS enjoyed a pre-Christmas treat with a difference when the borough’s Ukrainian and Polish communities hosted a festive bonanza.
The Dnipro Choir and the Podhala Dance Troupe entertained visitors to Oldham Library with a spectacular show and traditional delicacies.
The event holds huge importance in Oldham as Ukrainian and Polish people have not always got along. Recent political changes have since improved relations.
Both Polish and Ukrainian families exchange gifts on St Nicholas Day (December 6).
The Polish community also celebrates on December 25 while Ukrainians, who follow the Orthodox Church tradition, celebrate on January 7.
The event was organised in conjunction with Oldham Adult and Community Services.
Ethnic minorities services officer Naveed Aziz said: “I’m delighted that both communities could come together in this way to share their traditions with other Oldhamers.
“This is an example of how people can retain pride in their cultures and, at the same time, share with others.
“We’ll certainly be looking to do this again in the future.”
