Closing the door on bogus callers
Date published: 21 December 2009
CLOSE the door on cold callers — that’s the message from police after pensioners fell victim to conmen in Royton and Shaw.
On each occasion the caller has tricked their way inside by telling the victim they are waiting for a friend to arrive home who lives near by.
Once inside, they steal purses and cash.
PC Adam Murphy, of the Royton and Shaw Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I cannot emphasise enough the importance of people checking the identity of callers to their home.
“If you are not expecting them, treat them with suspicion and do not let them in unless you have checked ID and are absolutely certain they are genuine callers.
“I would also encourage neighbours to keep an eye on each other and report any suspicious activity to 0161- 856 8983.”
