Santas on the run for charity
Date published: 30 December 2009
A COLLECTION of Santa Clauses capered around Saddleworth in the snow to raise funds for charity.
The members of Saddleworth Runners took part in their annual festive Christmas gallop around local pubs, dressed in Father Christmas costumes.
Around 30 running Santas and Miss Santas braved the ice and snow to support the Prostate Cancer Charity.
Starting from the Cross Keys, Uppermill, the group went to the near-by Church Inn; the Diggle Hotel and Hanging Gate, in Diggle; The Navigation, Dobcross and The Waggon, Uppermill, before returning to the Cross Keys.
At every pub the group sang Christmas carols and collected for the charity. Club secretary Howard Chambers said: “Every year we pick a charity to collect for and this year we married up the Santa Run and charity collection. It was a great success.”
The club has raised nearly £3,000 this year through the London Marathon, Saddleworth Runners’ own local races and even an Anne Summers’ night for the women members.
In the UK prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men — one man dies every hour of the disease and 35,000 men are diagnosed every year. More information can be found at: www.saddleworth-runners.co.uk
