The lighter side of big freeze

Grasscroft resident John Beverley shares a joke with a smiling snowman outside a house at Lydgate. John, a well-known local beekeeper and walker, said: “We know the weather is making things tough — but you always have to look on the bright side of life. I think a smiling snowman sitting on a bench lifts people’s spirits.”

Snow excuse for a street party
THERE’S snow excuse not to party in Kingston Close, Shaw.
Residents on the cul-de-sac decided to throw an impromptu alfresco street party after growing increasingly fed up of the snow.
Old and young grabbed a selection of food and drink and donned their warmest winter woollies to enjoy each other’s company.

Cool runnings
THE BIG freeze hasn’t stopped one of the most remote nurseries in Oldham from staying open.
Determined and dedicated staff walked in from outlying villages to Swan Meadow Nursery, Delph, to ensure it was open for parents and children. Some staff set off at 6am with one walking for more than three hours to get there.
Owner Elaine Fraser praised staff, adding: “The staff have given children a wonderful experience, building igloos and having warm milk in our log cabin
