THRILL-seeking youngsters are putting their lives in danger as the big freeze continues.

These images captured in Failsworth shows children risking their lives playing on the frozen Rochdale Canal.

Parents are being urged to warn their children about the dangers of playing on frozen rivers, lakes and canals as the borough endures its coldest ever temperatures.

The council has joined forces with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, United Utilities and British Waterways in an attempt to prevent serious accidents and even death.

Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member for environment and infrastructure said: “We expect that people will want to enjoy the picturesque countryside, walking and playing in our snow covered hills, but stay away from water and ice.

“Do not encourage your children or animals on to the ice.

“A small dog died earlier this week chasing a stick thrown by its owner onto the ice.

“If you are going sledging, make sure there are no ice covered water courses at the foot of the hill.”

Station Commander Jon Heydon from Hollins Fire Station added: “Stay off the ice.

“Even if it looks firm, the currents underneath create warm spots that cannot be seen from the surface.

“Once you’re through the ice, the currents will suck you underneath and you have a life expectancy of less than a minute.”

A spokesman for United Utilities said: “We recognise that people will want to spend time out and about but should steer clear of reservoirs.

“In these conditions it can be difficult to see where the edge of the reservoir is and the steep banks around many reservoirs can make it treacherous.”

Council officers will be posting new notices at key locations warning of the dangers.
