Training chief exec dies at 64
Date published: 13 January 2010
ROY McHugh, who was chief executive at Oldham Training Centre, has died.
Mr McHugh, who was 64, and lived in Shaw all his life, started at what was then the Oldham Engineering Training Group in October, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine.
Mr McHugh was originally a board member representing Cobden Chadwick, where he worked as the company accountant.
When this business went into administration he was asked to apply for chief executive position at OETG, which was later renamed Oldham Training Centre.
He was responsible for developing the training centre, in Lees Road, Oldham, into what his colleagues are proud to call a “reputable learning centre”.
A prominent member of number of committees in Oldham, including Oldham Local Learning Partnership Executive Group, Mr McHugh will be remembered as a respected champion of the engineering traditions of Oldham and a keen supporter of the apprenticeship system.
He helped develop the training base into a centre of excellence not only for engineering students but also for IT, business administration and day-release courses serving the wider business base of Oldham.
He also worked tirelessly within the borough to advocate work-based learning.
