Margaret turns 101
Date published: 13 January 2010
TURNING 101 won’t stop Margaret Monk from getting her own way.
The feisty centenarian, who only moved into Dryclough Manor, Royton, last March, is clinging on to her independence.
Margaret worked until she was 80 and believes being industrious is the key to a long and happy life.
She was born in Greenacres and spent a number of years working as manager at the Waddington’s tobacconists, Huddersfield Road, before leaving at 70 to help run a jewellery stall on Oldham’s outdoor market for 10 years.
She married James in 1952 and he died 28 years ago. Margaret has two step-children, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Margaret’s step-daughter, Olive O’Callaghan, said: “She is still very strong willed and quick to tell us exactly what she wants.”
Family and friends will gather at Dryclough Manor, for a special party for Margaret along with staff and fellow residents today.
