Working together to beat the recession

A NEW group for local businesses is hoping to build a better future for Oldham as the borough fights the recession.
The Oldham Construction Sector Group (OCSG) aims to make sure borough-based businesses are able to benefit from the physical regeneration of Oldham.
Through a series of themed networking events, businesses will be given the latest information on development opportunities across Oldham.
The group is run by the private sector for the private sector, with the support of Oldham Council and Greater Manchester Chamber.
The OCSG has already held a number of successful networking events at the Bower Hotel, Chadderton.
Representatives of 70 businesses, from traditional construction companies to plumbers, decorators, builder’s merchants, solicitors and development specialists, all attended.
Oldham Council leader Howard Sykes said: “The idea behind the group is simple — if Oldham businesses are aware of current and proposed construction projects, the timescales involved, who to talk to and how the procurement system works, they are in a better position to plan and tender for projects in the borough.”
The next event again takes place at at the Bower Hotel on February 3 at 8am.
The focus of the event is the Gateways to Oldham Project — a £100m housing redevelopment and refurbishment programme.
The main contractors, Rok plc, will be providing a brief overview of the project as well as the sub-contract opportunities available to Oldham businesses.
The event will also feature short presentations on how to create joint-ventures.
