Bread life-line

A SADDLEWORTH pub has rolled into action to help people hit by the winter whiteout.
The Golden Fleece, Denshaw, is selling fresh bread on the premises and delivering meals to those who can’t get out in the icy weather.

The village was left without a shop when the post office and general store closed in March.

Mark and Angela Flynn took over the pub and restaurant in July and said: “With the weather and the snow we decided to offer a fresh bread service for the local community and meals on wheels for elderly people who can’t get out.

“We have got about 11 different types of bread including white, brown, sundried tomato, wholegrain, a sweet bread, raisin bread and for meals on wheels we basically do everything right across the menu as well as a Sunday lunch.

“We told the local community police officer about it and he said it was a great idea. With there being no shop, when it does snow some people can struggle.”

The weather has also hit trade and Mark added: “Just before Christmas we were doing very well with the restaurant side and New Year was very busy, but over the past 10-12 days it’s just nothing at all. I think everyone up here is feeling the same.”
