Borough’s grit bins refilled
Date published: 15 January 2010
OLDHAM Council has started filling the 550 grit bins located across the borough.
Although supplies of salt are still being managed by central government through Salt Cell, the council has sourced a supply of coarse grit that will be effective in improving traction on roads covered in compacted snow and ice, which is the major cause of disruption.
Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said: “This is an alternative which should go some way to improving access for people on icy roads.
“At the same time work goes on gritting all major and secondary routes across the borough.
“As well as this, eight JCBS and a snow blower are working throughout the today clearing rural minor lanes and roads.”
It is expected to take two to three days to top up all the bins.
