Bridge leap chaos

POLICE chiefs have revealed the increasing drain on resources caused by suicide attempts from bridges in Greater Manchester.
Thirty officers were deployed at 3.30am yesterday after a 30-year-old woman threatened to jump from Nut Bank bridge on to the M60.
Despite negotiators’ attempts to talk her down the woman threw herself on to the clockwise carriageway below nearly nine hours later.
She was taken to hospital but had a miraculous escape as her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening and involve suffering shattered heels.
All three lanes of the M60 anti-clockwise and two lanes of the clockwise carriageway were closed between junctions 19 and 21 throughout yesterday morning.
Diversions were put in place and drivers urged to avoid the area but the incident caused chaos for hundreds of motorists.
GMP Chief Constable Peter Fahy thanked the public for their patience and praised his officers, saying: “This is a difficult incident for GMP to deal with and we are starting to see a pattern emerge across the Force.”
