A 46-year-old man suffered a broken leg and a 39-year-old woman sustained head and chest injuries in the 25-vehicle crash that closed the A627M at Chadderton in Friday’s morning rush-hour.
Seven people were taken to hospital after 15 vehicles were involved in the main collision on the motorway sliproad, where Broadway joins the A627M and heads towards the M62.
The rest of the vehicles were involved in minor collisions as motorists tried to stop on treacherous black ice covering the carriageway.
Witnesses said cars had careered up the embankments at the side of the motorway.
The road was shut until mid-afternoon.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call traffic police on 0161-856 1550.
