Support for jobless is vital: Woolas

Date published: 20 January 2010

THE number of people unemployed across the region in this recession is almost half the 1992 levels.

Unemployment in December, 1992, was 353,784 across the North-West compared with the current 195,741.

Labour’s North-West Regional Minister and Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Phil Woolas said it was vital to continue supporting people back into work during the economic downturn.

He said: “Every job lost in the North-West is a real tragedy for that person and their family.

“That is exactly why the Labour Government will continue to do everything we can to protect communities across the North-West from the recession, support people back into work and to get the economy growing again.

“During this difficult period, Labour is taking action to help people in the North-West back into work and supporting businesses and homeowners.

Direct assistance, such as the business tax deferral scheme and mortgage assistance and advice will help local people.

“While these figures suggest the measures Labour has taken are having an effect here in the North-West, there is absolutely no room for complacency.

“While the economy is fragile, it is crucial that we maintain support both for the local economy here in the North-West and nationally.

“To cut back on the fiscal stimulus, like the Tories are suggesting, would again be the wrong call at the wrong time.”

Mr Woolas’s comments come ahead of the latest unemployment figures which were being published today.
