HATHERSHAW College pupils are going for gold after being accepted into the London 2012 Olympic network.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has awarded the technology and sports college a plaque and certificate to acknowledge their involvement in the London 2012 education programme, which extends far beyond PE and Sport.
Olympic organisers recognised their commitment to its values of friendship, encouragement, determination, equality, inspiration, courage, excellence and respect. They now join schools and colleges across the UK as members of the special London 2012 community — called the Get Set network — and will receive access to exclusive competitions and 2012 Games related opportunities.
LOCOG chairman and former Olympic gold medallist Sebastian Coe said: “When London won the right to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we made a clear promise to use the power of the 2012 Games to inspire young people.
“I am proud to welcome Hathershaw in to the Get Set Network for their exciting work around the Olympic values.”
Hathershaw College deputy head teacher Mark Giles said: “Being part of the Get Set network is a great opportunity for the school.
“Even though we are in the north, we want to be as much a part of this historic event as the people of London.
“The Olympic values are something that I am sure all schools try to emulate, especially respect, equality and determination.”
