ONE of Lancashire’s oldest women has died aged 106.
Independent Gwen Cardiff died at North Manchester General Hospital on Thursday after suffering a stroke.
The great-great-grandmother, who was a farmer’s daughter, became a mill worker at 13 and married first husband Robert Delaney at 21. They lived in Neville Street, Shaw, but he was killed at Dunkirk.
Gwen remarried and worked at Joseph Clegg, High Crompton, until the cotton mill closed the day before her 70th birthday. She then delivered leaflets until she was 84.
For much of her life the mother-of-four lived as independently as possible, later moving to Rochdale. She did not recover after suffering a stroke at Rosemary Care Home, Milnrow.
The service and committal will be held at Rochdale Crematorium on Friday at 2.20pm. Family flowers only.
