Weather delays Metrolink work
Date published: 02 February 2010
WORKING hours on the Failsworth Metrolink stop have been extended after January’s big freeze halted construction.
The stop is part of the new Metrolink line from Manchester Victoria to Rochdale via Oldham.
Trams are expected to begin running to Oldham Mumps in autumn 2011, and to Rochdale in spring 2012.
However, the heavy snow in Oldham last month and sub-zero temperatures — which dropped to -11.7C (11F) one night — meant construction work was suspended.
Now Oldham Council has granted approval to extend working hours throughout February in order to finish the project on time.
Standard working hours to transform the former Dean Lane train station are normally 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
During February, these have been extended to 7.30am to 7pm.
In a letter to affected residents, Steve Burns, Metrolink stakeholder manager, apologised for any inconvenience.
There are two helpline numbers (0161-244 1555 or 0845-604 2724) or e-mail future.metrolink@gmpte.gov.uk.
