OLDHAM COUNCIL
A CAMPAIGN to stop the Government charging VAT on essential equipment bought by Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was given the thumbs up.
Oldham Council is urging local MPs to support its move in writing to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The call came after the invaluable work carried out by the volunteers in the worst weather Oldham has experienced in the last three decades.
“They did an excellent job,” said Councillor John Dillon.
OLDHAMERS are being urged to sign an online Downing Street petition to award National Defence Medals to servicemen and women.
Councillors said everyone owed armed forces personnel a debt of gratitude, and Councillor Glynis Shaw spoke as the grandmother of a serving soldier, saying: “It’s right that endeavour and sacrifice should be rewarded. It boosts the morale of the armed forces, who have been under great stress in recent times.”
CYCLISTS who use Metrolink will be able to lock their bikes in secure storage at four local park-and-ride sites.
They will be at Shaw and Crompton, Derker, Oldham Mumps and Hollinwood.
The public will also be encouraged to take their bikes on-board during off-peak periods if tram bosses can find a way to store them safely.
Councillors agreed to support the campaign to restore Ashes Test cricket to the North-West by 2013 after Old Trafford fell out of favour.
