FORMER MAYOR, Alwyn McConnell
TRIBUTES were paid and a one minute silence observed for former Mayor of Oldham Alwyn Bywater McConnell who died aged 88 on New Year’s Day.
Mr McConnell, who died in Avonleigh Gardens care home, Watersheddings, was a long-serving Labour councillor on both the Oldham County Borough Council, and the Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council from 1974, and was mayor in 1985.
Councillor John Hudson described him as a gentleman and very astute politician who was in touch with the people. Councillor Richard Knowles described him as true old Labour man.
