The drama unfolded when the duo burst into the house in Alexander Drive, Milnrow, at 10.30pm on Tuesday.
When the shocked resident got up and confronted the thugs, one attacked him with a screwdriver.
The pair then fled with a purse and handbag containing cash and a mobile phone.
