DOUBLE yellow lines outside Delph Primary School have had to be removed — because they were painted too early.

Council contractors had to get rid of the parking restrictions because the proper traffic order had not been introduced.

They will now be repainted when it is obtained in the next four weeks.

Councillor Mark Alcock said the error had not cost the council any money.

And he denied that other unfinished work to create a package of road safety measurers around the school had actually put pupils in danger.

Parish councillor Ken Hulme blasted the delays and said: “The unfinished state of the Delph School Safety Zone has left children and parents even less safe than when the work started many months ago.

“Work on the safety zone stopped well before Christmas creating an appalling hazard for children crossing the road to school.”

Prolonged severe weather was blamed for the delay by Councillor Alcock who said: “A highways engineer visited the site on Monday and confirmed that, in general, it was clear and safe.

“The council’s lining contractor was required to remove the double yellow lines because they were put down in error, at no cost to the council, prior to the introduction of the Traffic Regulation Order.

“Subject to there being no objections, this should be introduced in the next four weeks and the double yellow lines will be re-laid.

“Two vehicle activated signs will be installed in March/April as part of the wider scheme to introduce these at various locations across the borough.”
