MEMBERS of the armed forces ate to be given a range of discounts and benefits at local shops.
A town centre forces discount scheme will see service men and women receive special treatment as part of a drive to show the borough’s support for their efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Members of the Town Centre Partnership are encouraging national chain stores as well as independent traders to sign up to the scheme.
Michele Carr, from Oldham Council’s economy, skills and places department, said: “This would demonstrate Oldham’s support for service men and women returning from active duty.
“There are a number of similar schemes in operation nationally and now we want to approach town centre traders to see if they will help and support the scheme.
“It is up to individual traders what they want to do, some are offering discounts or special promotions to military personnel.”
Council leader Howard Sykes said: “I am pleased that the Town Centre Partnership is considering this proposal.
“This is part of ongoing discussions by the council to do what it can to support and recognise the members of our armed forces.”
